In an increasingly digital world, I’m rooting for more human interaction.
Human interaction is essential to our mental health, basic well-being, and ability to thrive. So it’s no wonder that our remote-first environment has led to a prevalence of loneliness, even among highly connected, extremely successful people.
There is an extraordinary tax to pay for a work-from-home culture that doesn’t include the opportunity for basic human connection. It leads to:
- A team of individuals more focused on their responsibilities than on the overall results of the team
- A lack of “we’re in this together” spirit that makes it harder than it needs to be to get things done
- Missed opportunities for knowledge sharing that happens informally, like while waiting for coffee with a colleague
It’s also an easy fix—say yes to opportunities for meaningful and purposeful interactions and organize them for others.
In the workshops and retreats I facilitate, which are often for groups of people who work remotely, I regularly witness:
- The most unassuming people crack open and reveal struggles their leaders never knew about
- People seeing one another in a new light and treating one another with a deep reverence and respect
- A sense of aliveness and purpose among the team, leading to better relationships, performance, and job and life satisfaction
If your world has become small, jump on opportunities to get together with people in real life.
If you lead a team, make a profound impact on how you relate to one another and the quality of work you produce by scheduling a few days each quarter for your team to slow down and connect in person with one another.
We need each other. By leaning into the challenge of overcoming the epidemic of loneliness, isolation, and separateness, we have the opportunity to influence the people around us not just to perform better at work but to feel more fulfilled, alive, and seen.
I’d love to help you facilitate meaningful, in-person, connection-building interactions with you and your team, learn more about my work with organizational leaders and their teams and schedule a 30-minute consultation with me.
