We are living in wildly polarized times.
Turn on the news, scroll your feed, or go to a meeting and you’ll see it: people entrenched in sides, fighting for rightness, interpreting every moment through the narrow lens of either/or.
This is not just a political problem. It’s a leadership problem.
The truth? It’s not just out there—it lives in each of us.
The us vs. them paradigm is seductive. It gives the illusion of clarity and control. It makes complex issues seem simpler. It relieves us of the discomfort of nuance.
It’s also one of the most destructive mental models we can lead from.
Binary Thinking Is a Symptom of Fear
At the root of either/or thinking is fear. When fear goes unexamined, it becomes a seductress.
It tells you:
- Safety lies in taking sides
- There is no room for contradiction
- If you’re not dominating, you’re losing
The reality is this:
When you lead from fear, you become reactive, not creative. You default to control, not connection. You shut down new ideas before they even have a chance to surface.
Fear seduces us into righteousness. Into self-protection. Into an imagined enemy.
In that trance, we lose access to our greatest human capacities—compassion, curiosity, creativity.
Either/Or Is a Lie. We Live in a Both/And World.
Leadership is rarely about choosing between two extremes. It is about holding the tension between seemingly opposing truths.
You can be principled and open.
You can set boundaries and stay in connection.
You can lead with vision and acknowledge what’s hard.
You can honor grief and still choose possibility.
This is the work of transformational leadership: to hold contradiction without collapsing. To stay present in discomfort. To stay open when it would be easier to shut down.
Perhaps the greatest loss in either/or thinking isn’t just innovation or empathy—it’s the transformational opportunities we miss when we refuse to be with tension, complexity, and the unknown.
This is why I often repeat five words that Michael Beckwith has said for many years:
Pain pushes until vision pulls.
Vision cannot pull if we’re stuck in reactivity. It can’t lead us forward if we’re digging our heels on being right.
Beyond the Binary: A Call to Truly Transformational Leadership
We are a house divided—collectively and most of us, personally. Our external and internal conflict is creating perpetual suffering.
A new leadership paradigm is required to create a new experience. Leading beyond the binary means developing emotional sobriety. It means being with fear, not seduced by it. It means noticing when your inner dramatist wants to “win” the moment—and choosing presence instead.
It means asking deeper questions:
- Where am I resisting nuance?
- What part of me needs to be right?
- What would it look like to stay in curiosity, even when it’s uncomfortable?
These are not rhetorical questions. They are practices—ones that are not cultivated alone.
While awareness begins internally, transformation happens in relationship. We learn to see—and hold—the whole when we’re surrounded by others doing the same.
The Invitation
What if more human beings:
- Stopped choosing sides and started choosing curiosity?
- Stopped leading from impatience and started leading from presence?
- Held the tension of this moment without collapsing into fear?
This is the deeper invitation of our time:
To live and lead from a place beyond binary thinking.
To choose curiosity over control.
To practice compassion without compromising your power.
To become the kind of leader the future needs—not reactive, but resilient. Not divisive, but discerning. Not performative, but profoundly present.
Don’t wait for the world to change. You can start now—with yourself. With your voice. With your choices.
This is a practice.
A path.
A way of being.
If you’re ready to walk that path alongside other accomplished, awake, and visionary leaders, Transformational Leadership Circle is forming now. This curated, nine-month experience is designed for leaders who want to lead from depth—not just strategy. From alignment—not just achievement.
