One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to create a more feedback-friendly environment is assuming that all feedback lives in the realm of critique and criticism.
Organizations that operate in a punitive, fear-based way (using pressure to get results), are operating in the old paradigm of leadership. Using positive feedback to create an environment that nurtures people into doing their best work is easier and more fun.
Showing appreciation for the gifts and talents of the people you have the privilege of working with is one of the greatest investments you can make in the people you influence.
By paying attention to what brings people alive and where they thrive, you can continually refine roles to optimize each person’s energy, freedom, and creativity. Sharing your genuine appreciation invites people to rise into greater ideas of who they know themselves to be and tends to create loyal, long-term, growth-oriented employees.
I’m not suggesting you pacify people or enable behaviors that aren’t in alignment with your goals. Rather, I’m highlighting that during a time when we are starving for affirmative words of appreciation, your positive feedback can make a tremendously positive impact.
You might even consider appreciating yourself more for the incredible gifts and talents you possess and contribute. If you can’t easily appreciate yourself, you likely have a tough time appreciating people on your team.
Use your influence wisely. You are among a generation of leaders transforming how business and society operate. Showing appreciation for yourself and the people in your life builds everyone up and encourages growth and expansion. This is what transformational leadership looks like in action.
If you’re seeking a fresh and dynamic approach to leadership in and out of the workplace, Transformational Leadership Coaching may be your next step.
